A tangled story weaving through the memories of a Chilean priest lying on his deathbed, recalling an era of Allende and Pinochet, thoughts and actions swept along by acquaintances and interlopers, built from extremely long sentences that hold together and move the reader along. A book to read again, digging deeper into the multi-layered language, even in translation.

This is the second book that I've come across that doesn't believe in paragraph breaks. Though this style bothers me the story is an enjoyable read.

Three stars is giving Bolano the benefit of the doubt. I understand that this is a death bed confession/rant, and confessions and rants aren't often times coherent. When you rant, you speak just like Bolano wrote. So, he gets the benefit of the doubt for that.

I mostly didn't like it simply because I had to read it for a class. Rambling and confusing, I didn't really understand this book. It is beautifully written, don't get me wrong, but I felt no connection to the story or characters or really anything...it's fine.

soooo good! most sentences went on for pages and pages and I was swept along in its mad tide. ‘this is how literature is made in the West’. oof
