By reading this novel, I understood what is a page-turner. This soap opera style story is not my thing, but I managed to finish the novel pretty quick.

I read this novel in my younger days and I don't dare to read this book nowadays. It is one of the I-would-like-this-book-better-at-my-younger-age book with the standard television drama show plots. This book was a good novel and I could still remember the main plot. I was charmed by the storytelling for a reader without any reading preference yet.

This is Sheldon at his best. The story of the Jaime McGregor, a poor Irishman who set sailed for South Africa to make a fortune with diamonds. After being hustled, swindled, almost killed and left for dead he returns as a ghost settling old scores and making his fortune as a diamond merchant. However, that quest doesn't come without consequences of his actions, such as a wife from his enemy and a son that can't survive his ambition. A stroke takes him out, but his wife continues his legacy as she's conceived Kate, Jaime's daughter he'd never grow to see.

Kate is just like her father, ambitious to a fault and will get what she wants by any means necessary. Like her father her quest to keep the next generation in the company tears the family asunder, leaving her in the end without any good prospects for an appropriate heir. Her meddling not only destroys her immediate family, but theirs as well.

This is a roller coaster clusterfuck of first world problems only rich people have, but a guilty pleasure.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first half or so of this book. It was gripping and fun. As soon as the chapters on Alexandra and Eve started, it took on a whole new tone, that I didn't fully enjoy.

My other nitpick is the details of business were glossed over. For a book about very business savvy people, very little about HOW they were so good at work is explained.

I was once again blown away. In this novel, he presented such strong characters especially the main. Although Kate (the main character) can be manipulative at times, it is empowering for us women to see her rise up. Sidney does not sugarcoat the situations in this book and that’s what make this book exciting.
