A lot of people said this book would be heartbreaking, but it wasn't really heartbreaking for me... (Is there something wrong with me? Am I too insensible?)
It's really sad that Laurel lost her sister May and what happened to Laurel the night May died, but it wasn't shocking. It was quite obvious what happened to her, actually.

Also it was... just a bunch of teenage problems. When Laurel was writing, she sometimes seemed like a really interesting girl: she liked poems and the way she described some things... Beautiful.
But on other moments she was just some dumb, annoying teenager. That's why it wasn't too boring, but I don't think such people as Lauren exist. She wasn't real to me.

Despite all this criticism, I did enjoy Love Letters to the Dead :)
It's a quick read and it is sometimes beautifully written!

Oh, and (although I hate open ends) an open end would probably be better for this book. In real life, if you write (mostly negative) about
Spoiler a teacher
in your letters, you don't give them to
Spoiler that same teacher back.
. And she also talks about really personal things which I wouldn't let anybody read, especially not
Spoiler a teacher.

Ava Dellaira could better have just stopped in the middle of a sentence because she died or something like that. Something that makes you thinking: what happened?? WHY has she stopped writing letters?! but that the story doesn't tell that part.

Probably, if she had done an open end, I would have a hate/love-relation with the end but oh, well... I must have some criticism, right? ;)

3/5 stars for this book

My reaction to this young adult novel is very mixed. On the one hand, the story of main character Laurel's journey from devastating loss to the possibility of healing is quite moving, although terribly, terribly sad. At the same time, the construct of the book -- with Laurel's story told via letters to famous dead people, including Kurt Cobain, River Phoenix, and Judy Garland, among others -- feels artificial and pulls the reader outside of the story again and again.

(My full review is posted at Bookshelf Fantasies.)

It's my first time to re-read a book and I'm so glad I did! Reading Love Letters to the Dead a second time just made me love this novel even more. I'm also finally going to review it this time!

There are books that you love, but there are books that will keep touching your heart for always.

It wasn't terribly bad, but it wasn't enjoyable.
Did not hit me (Although it dealt with very sensitive topics). I wasn't feeling it.. I had to force myself to pick up the book, and when I did, The story did not flow, it dragged out, so it took me forever to finish the book.
The letter format felt forced, and to beginning of each letter with a wikipedia page was WACK!
The side characters were a bit likable, but we did not spend enough time with them, also, I thought that their stories were far more interesting than our main protagonist.

First, I thought wouldn't recommend this book for non-metalheads, or if you're not exposed to classical music/film (Basically if you don't recognize the names of people the letters are sent to, (mentioned in the blurb on the back the book)) don't pick it up, because you wouldn't be familiar with the names mentioned, and won't relate, or get the references.
But now, since I did not like the book as a whole, even with getting the refs (since what attracted me from the beginning was the mention of Kurt Cobain, and the others). I wouldn't recommend it. period.
