Another Drizzt book I read when it came out in 2001, but reread it to refresh my memory. Is still a great book & I enjoyed it very much.

Disjointed and overly long, here we see how the Companions of the Hall are re-united with the help of old acquaintances.

The Companions of the Hall finally are reunited (towards the end of the book) to get back Wulfgar's hammer (yup - that's the premise of the book).

It was great getting everyone back together again and I thought the climax of the book would be this epic battle against the pirates who had Wulfgar's hammer - this is Salvatore after all and if he does one thing better than anyone else it's the battle scene. But it let me down and felt rushed.

Good read but not great.

Solid, good-reading fantasy from Salvatore. It builds itself up to a satisfying climax of action and revelation, with lots of good storytelling in between. Salvatore can make a journey in a span of pages, not chapters, and I think that’s why I prefer him to writers like Jordan—he gets the reader where the reader wants to go, without dragging things out to an ungodly length. Each chapter of his novels has direction and advances the plot in some meaningful way. I was staggeringly surprised at the revelation that Le’lorinel was actually the girl that Drizzt saved as a young drow—probably the best twist since Ender. Great irony for my dollar, too. Wulfgar’s reuniting with his friends was everything it should have been, as was his performance with Aegis-fang when he finally got it back into his hands. It was reminiscent of IDT, in that it swash-buckled and flew along with plenty of face time for Drizzt and just enough peripheral story to make the conclusion what it needed to be. Are we ever going to get Drizzt and Catti-brie hooked up?

7/10 A fitting, if somewhat predictable, conclusion to the tales of Drizzt and his companions.

It's still a decent and fun entry in the series, albeit with some issues.
It's really more of the same, but anyone that got to book 13 should be well acquainted with the formular by now. The last two books of the series fell a bit flat for me, although I still had fun with them overall. The repitition of Wulfgars internal struggle became tiresome and so I took a break from the series. But then again, there are moments of brilliance from R. A. Salvatore and I was again reminded, why I come back to the companions of the hall again and again.
