Finally, a return to the type of Drizzt book that hooked me on the series to begin with. After really, really struggling through the last few books (and skipping the previous one altogether) this one came very close to capturing the feeling of the first trilogy and had me excited to keep reading. Finally, a break from the Drow. Finally, a break from Emo Wulfgar (for the most part). Finally, a return to the cross-country adventuring of the earlier books. And on top of all that, we got some character development for Regis!

Probably my second favorite Paths of Darkness after Spine of the World. I found myself wanting so badly to see Sheila Kree get hers that I couldn't put the book down in order to find out her fate.

This was a kind of a good stopping point. The books continue but my husband has told me they keep getting darker. A lot of Lose ends were tied up and some character arcs were completed. Probably will be moving on to some of the Eberron books next.

I feel like more pages should have been devoted to Wulfgar and his quest for himself, and I was a little shocked by how much the threat of sexual assault came up, seeing how the previous books had almost none of that.
Still, for the most part, it was fun. Paths of Darkness has become my favorite sub-series in the Legend of Drizzt so far.

See, Salvatore has these dull plots with decent enough adventure hooks that are middling, and he has hard to parse swordfights, and you'll be thinking of quitting...
And then he'll spend 20 pages on a brilliantly paced attack on a small cabin by ogres, and the way our heroes intervene! And it's great!
This installment wraps up the Wulfgar arc decently well. Not as sublime as the previous book, but I enjoyed a mystery about one character's motivations. There's some fun beats with characters misplacing each other. A minor character from earlier episodes gets a well earned win here, in a support role. I was surprised at one part where a female character wasn't killed as motivation for a protagonist. Good job, Salvatore.
Ultimately I didn't feel it brought enough new to the world or series. The resolution was satisfying and emotional, having read the rest of these books. The plot was just a bit too narrow.

Once again, R.A. Salvatore has not disappointed me (okay, on some parts he did and sometimes I have to curse him-I kept screaming 'NO, NO, NO!' throughout the book, close to the end) BUT I enjoyed the ride and I loved each character, though for the love of god, I got mad at Le'lorinel for being obsessed with Drizzt when Drizzt didn't do a DANG OL' THING to her, but it was sad in the end that she had to die and Drizzt morning her in the end.
The one part that semi-ticked me off was Wulfgar. He's on the ship Sea Sprite, looking for the pirate ship Bloody Kneel to get Aegis-fang back. But he was like, 'Well, I don't know if I should get it, I have a wife and a daughter and I wanna protect them by doing the right thing.' and honestly? I wanted to THROW THE BOOK TO THE WALL. This wasn't the Wulfgar I've read, the Wulfgar that had Aegis-fang and would do anything to protect his family and have adventures with his friends. But then I read that he slapped Catti-brie...I WANTED TO HIT HIM SO HARD IN THE HEAD. SO BADLY. But Bruenor Battlehammer did it for me which I got happy about.
BUT I was happy to see Regis and Catti-brie in this book (since the last book I've read about Drizzt pissed me off to high heaven), but I keep aweing at the cute relationship between Drizzt and Catti-brie...though I keep picturing Bruenor with his axe behind him like 'Don't do it, ye durned elf!' though I tweeted a quote from Catti-brie that said, 'Did ye ever think ye should just shut up and kiss me?' and I was WAITING for these two to kiss-WAITING. But sadly they didn't (in which in my head I cursed R.A. Salvatore for making me wait).
But I loved this book, I enjoyed it and would love to read more about Drizzt and the Companions of the Hall because it was awesome and amazing and I really do recommend this book a lot!!!
