i feel like old plays of this stature (shakespeare being the bulk) are always something i struggle to get a ton out of simply because of the fact that they can be difficult to truly understand if you aren’t being properly translated each scene’s significance. it borders reading something in another language—which is already challenging enough alone—but you also have to take into account the whole other time period/location of the play. in all this was the typical anti-hero plot which we can definitely give shakespeare a heap of credit for, though nothing that happened here was all that surprising or intriguing. it would be a fun play to see on stage!

I actually LOVED this. So many great zingers. Tea-sipping-worthy melodrama. *chef's kiss*

One of my personal Shakespeare favorites...you just love to hate Richard.

Ooh, this is a play I'm deeply excited about, mostly because I get to be Richard III! I still lack a comprehensive grasp of every nuance, but I am extremely excited to portray this most wicked of characters on the stage. Richard himself has so many faces; to quote Hamlet he "can smile, and smile, and be a villain." So persuasive, even to those he has previously wronged. Yet the silver-tongued liar gets his comeuppance eventually, after his painful and repeated dismissals of conscience. I'll try to review it more fully after spending 4 weeks with it and performing this penultimate play.

Though I am slightly biased, having portrayed Richard, Shakespeare's brilliant (though historically dubious) retelling of the wretched, conniving, evil Duke of Gloucester who by "prophesies, libels, and dreams..." secures the throne of England, only to lose it to Henry Tudor, the Earl of Richmond, is a spectacular play. Beautifully evil verse, a smattering of ironic humor, convincingly conflicted accomplices, and an altogether despicable yet deceptively eloquent villain make for one of my favorite Shakespeare plays thus far. I'll be quoting it for months. Hats off to my wonderful fellow cast members, thanks for such a great BYS season!
