I found this book by chance at my public library a long time ago. It ended up being a book that takes place in the city I grew up in. There are so many twists and turns, and it's impossible to predict what will happen next. I got my mom and older sister into Brian Freeman after reading this book. The series is a fantastic read!

Did a very- aham- excitable 13 year old boy write this? What?! A 42 year old man did back in 2005? Insanity.
If I hadn’t read one of his more recent books, The Deep Deep Snow, I would never have picked up another one of his books again after this one. But luckily I have been blessed with the remarkable gift of foresight and I know his writing gets much, much better.
I will take the advice of that cute but mildly disturbing cat poster that was in every school teacher’s classroom once upon a time telling me to “hang in there!” (I mean you have to admit, it was kind of distressing never knowing- did it fall? Did it survive? Was it rescued? Or is it still hanging in there, forever suspended in a sick, never ending frame of torment meant to rally the motivation and spirits of struggling youths? These are questions we will never know.)
Anyways.
I will soldier on. You’re welcome, Brian.

Not bad. I enjoyed the setting of Duluth, MN (of course) but it took a bit to get into this one. The first 100 pages seemed to go rather slow but once I got past that, the story flew. The ending seemed a bit out there, but the twist was fun. Good effort & I look forward to his next one.

There is not a person that I could relate to in this novel. All of the characters are deeply flawed, there isn't a single character with any value. The "romantic" episodes are graphic. The ending introduces a character out of nowhere, who plays a key role in the story. This novel was written in 2005, and I've read that he's gotten better in his 17 years.

I'll give it 3.5 stars, so above average for sure but not as good as many of his others. This is the first Jonny Stride novel and I have to say I don't care for him as much as Frost Easton or Cab Bolton, two of his other protagonists. There's more Strides than any of the others so I'm hoping they get better. The mystery was good but the characters maybe a little too cliche. I'm nit picking what was overall, a very good mystery.

So many twists and turns in this plot, it was astounding. Not until the last page, do we find out all of the answers. Terrific book!

I think I liked this book so much because I was able to relate to the surroundings. As a Minnesotan author he based the book in Duluth and I could picture everywhere they went perfectly- it was like I was almost there. This book kept me guessing the ENTIRE way through and I couldn't put it down- I had to know how everything happened. It was a good mix between mystery, drama and love. I really loved this book- I'm going to look into reading more of his books.

The audiobook narrator pronounced Ely wrong and it made me cringe. I enjoyed the book though I could do without the sexual scenes personally.
