In "Inner Mean Girl" the authors discuss several factors that inhibit one from truly loving themselves and finding self-acceptance. The book details 7 steps / 13 personas that invade our thoughts. Nothing really surprising here, as you'll recognize self-defeating behaviors quickly. The authors goal is to help women find a way out of their "inner critic" and enhance "inner wisdom". Through a series of detailed examples and quizzes, the authors guide individuals to recognizing the self-defeating behaviors and thoughts that invade your psyche and depress emotions, behaviors, and self-perception.
While the examples and realistic and advice are sound, it didn't have the deep connection that I've had with other books of this type (The Four Agreements). I did find that I was a bit distracted with so many types. Could have been condensed for my tastes, but others not in a professional role that helps others work through many of these negative thoughts daily may need the details in each. I'm always on the look out for books that I can use within a college classroom, particularly with those that deal with factors outside of intellect/potential that impact a student's performance. While this one had some good tips, I'm not sure that it'll keep the attention of many younger adults.

It was okay. Some good points, but a little to heavy on the cutesy for me.

Basically just cognitive behavioral therapy for low self-esteem, padded out with anecdotes and a sales pitch for their workshops.

3.5 for the book, 4.5 for the concepts! I saw Amy speak last month in San Francisco; it was an incredibly moving, enlightening workshop for us all. The book has a few too many trite catch phrases and code names for things, but I can see how a certain demographic would buy into that. The ideas at the core are what really interested me, and I got more out of the highlights at the session than I did from the full book. That said, if you're a woman who finds she's stressed, anxious, or fearful, is consistently holding herself back, or isn't realizing (or even acknowledging) her full potential, give this book a shot, even if you skip around to the parts that speak to you.
