Lois Lavrisa really knows how to write a cozy mystery and Killing with Kings does not disappoint. José is enjoying a poker game with some friends and colleagues prior to going on leave when one of the players loathed by pretty much everyone dies. As much as José would like not to care about the guy his instincts tell him something isn't right. From here we have many twists and turns a few red herrings and a surprise or 2 to keep you on your toes. I also really enjoyed how there was also the story of José's struggle with coming out with who he really is instead of hiding. I can not wait for the next book to see what is in store for us!!

José had his work cut out for him when no one believed what happened to Ray was nothing more than an accident. With the help of his friends and Nowak, they were able to put the person responsible behind bars, despite some bumbling from McFalls. Nowak needed to work on her impatience and not just barrel her way into situations without thinking about the consequences. It was sweet when Earl got up the courage and showed interest at the party. It seemed more people knew about José's secret than didn't know. I loved the twisty goodness with Elias and Maggie.

Killing with Kings by Lois Lavrisa
I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
Killing with Kings is a part of a series of mysteries, but I was able to enjoy it without having read any of the previous books. The story is of Sgt Jose Rodriguez, whose obnoxious coworker is murdered via peanut poisoning during a poker game. The story follows Rodriguez and the victim’s niece as they woke to solve the murder, even tho everyone else believes it was a tragic accident. The story was very entertaining and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys quick mysteries.
