Somewhat less enjoyable (and I dare say less relevant) than Candide but not completely without its charms:

The platitude, xenophobia and plagiarism that makes this flat tale does not bear well with me.
Moral of the story: "Destiny is unfair and absurd until it plays in your favor, then it's your God given right"
Some had leeway to write whatever armchair philosophy they wanted in 18th century thus reserving my right to dislike it in the 21th.

A short book of comic adventures, Zadig (both the title of the book and the protagonist) tells the ancient story of philosopher that lived in Babylon, who after going through a series of misfortunes, which involves - his imprisonment and enslavement for saving a lady beaten to death by her husband and being sentenced to be roasted alive for saving widowers to burn themselves on the ashes of their dead husbands - among others, finally becomes the King of Babylon, and is convinced about the mysterious workings of fate. Indeed, how impatient, and rightly so since we have but no clue, we are against the misfortunes we bare which might ultimately be for our own good.

Voltaire is one of my favorite authors and Zadig is one of my favorite stories. Indeed, at the beginning of his life, Zadig is a man who does not meet with glory and rewards, but is constantly deprived of what he could have deserved, even to the point of becoming a slave. He opposes jealousy, corruption, hypocrisy and supports justice and human rights. Despite his misfortunes, he is a leader and continues to work on his future projects until he wins the hand of Astarte, Queen of Babylon.
Zadig is also the novel that inspired Thierry Gillier to create the clothing brand Zadig & Voltaire. The brand has also created a literary prize to promote the avant-garde of French culture. The Zadig Prize is intended for young hopefuls and the Voltaire Prize is more generalist.
