Middle of the road for me. Took me a while to finish it and get in to it, but it wrapped up the first book well. I know they were setting up a spinoff sequel but don't think I'll continue!

y’all. i so very much enjoyed this book. this is a sequel to THE EVER KING, which is a dark fantasy romance. unlike the first book, which was more of a set-up and establish the romance, THE EVER QUEEN rounds out our main characters’ story, and allows its cast of memorable, wonderful side characters to shine and establish themselves. the romance between our two main characters, Eric and Livia, remains prominent, but it deepens to show how they are SO devoted to supporting one another and allowing the other to be the best they can be. just such a green flag couple 💚 of course, the tension is also PHEW 🥵 they COULD NOT keep their hands off each other sheesh!

it’s always hard to talk about a sequel without spoiling so I’ll keep this review brief. this book was a fast-paced, satisfying conclusion to THE EVER KING, which ended on a cliffhanger. THE EVER QUEEN expanded on the sea-based world a bit more, explored the different ways found family is manifested, showed us examples of different types of love - from the platonic to the romantic - and the ways that they are worth fighting for.

my biggest gripe is that some of the characters sometimes felt a little simple and predictable, but i overall found Andrews’ writing to be unexpectedly poignant in some areas, evocative, and well-done.

i highly recommend this book and series if you’re looking for a not-too-heavy fantasy romance read with devoted main characters, lovable side characters, and not too complicated world-building. it’s very fun and a great read that explores all different facets of romantic, familial, and romantic love.
