Book two in the “Blood of fae” series, this book picks up after the cliffhanger of book one, we are now in a new continent, with new fae, new magic and new obstacles.
This book is cantered around a completion to become emperor of that continent and it gives me hunger games vibes. This book continued to have amazing world building and character development.
The enemies to lovers part of the story continued and we saw more from Draven and Morgan and I got my wish of more of them together. We explore Morgan’s magic more in this book and learned more about who she really is.
We were introduced to new characters who have become a major part in the story. This book was just as good as book one and this series is becoming one of my favourites.

but like…. if they sat down and talked for like 4 hours over tea they could have sorted this out im sure. the back and forth the constant repeated questions bruh my eyes were spinning. morgan was all over the place and i get it. i do. except i dont. biting peoples heads off before hearing explanations is crazyyyy. and draven man… i tried to defend u but that secret u kept the whole time. not cool man. that was obviously not gonna be revealed very well the longer this went on now was it. idk my biggest peeve is how angry morgan got at javer. dont most characters in magic training have a grumpy rude teacher to help them lmfao. and when draven explained why he acted like that to beks it made sense im sorry if that makes me bad but they went in on javer harrrrd. and was the ambush a good idea? no probably not. but i think it delivered a very clear message THAT MORGAN STILL COULDN'T GRASP. CONTROL UR POWERS MAN OR WORSE COULD HAPPEN. SOMETHING IRREPARABLE. damn. let me in here i wanna fight.
there was a lot of really awkward moments in this book

“You think knights bear no scars? That they possess no disfigurements? That they are pure and whole?”

3.5⭐ I have mixed feelings about this one. The whole time, I thought “Wow this is better than the first one,” with many things I absolutely loved, but at the same time there were too many things that aggravated me—especially when it came to the main characters—to justify giving it a 4-star rating. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading it and I’m looking forward to knowing what happens next!
❤️ World building and evocative descriptions
❤️ Side characters and animal sidekicks
❤️ Jaw-dropping ending
❤️ Pronunciation guide
❌ Immature, annoying FMC
❌ Too much push and pull / slow burn done wrong
❌ Miscommunication Trope / “You Lied to Me!”
Note: Make sure to read the trigger warnings, as there are many and things get pretty dark here and there.
Plot:
Morgan wakes up in a kingdom she never knew existed, with magic everywhere and creatures beyond her wildest dreams. But most of all, she is confined to a bedroom and called the prince’s Paramour as a way to protect her from the many enemies lurking in the ruthless Court of Claws. With her own kingdom waging war on three fronts, Morgan wants to return to Camelot as soon as possible… but her life is irrevocably entwined with the prince’s, and first she will need to help him win his crown.
The pace was a little slow at first, but the world-building and location setting amply compensated. It was such a pleasure to discover the Court of Umbral Flames and meet the new characters with Morgan. The pace picked up as soon as Morgan was allowed to leave her chamber, with lots of action and danger. I felt like the story was more compelling, the stakes higher, than in the first book. It was definitely harder to put down!
Characters:
I feel like the biggest flaw in this series is the main characters as well as their development (or rather, lack of) and interactions. The side characters and sidekicks are all great (I mean, how can one not fall in love with Beks, Hawl, Nightclaw, and Gawain?), but the main characters are just… not. At first, I thought Morgan’s character had improved as compared to the first book. She seemed more assured and discerning, but then she fell in the immature-and-needlessly-defiant FMC trap. I should have counted how many times she says “I hate you” when Draven is just trying to help or protect her. Urgh. And Draven really does try to help and protect her, but in all the wrong ways. So much conflict could have been avoided if he simply chose to be more transparent, to explain. Why all the secrets? Why not tell her everything?! But I guess that would have ruined the slow burn / hate to love trope… All the push and pull between the main characters was tiresome and took away from the plot.
Writing:
The world-building and the place/clothing descriptions were pure gold—vivid, lyrical, immersive. I feel like Boleyn stepped up with this one, and I enjoyed her prose.

I'm torn about this one, I flew through it in less than 24 hours. But damn did that ending piss me off. And not in way where I hated where the story line went but like the writing got worse as the book went on. Then it was like the characters turned into 5 year olds fighting. Without giving spoilers I just think it was not done well...

I had a blast with Court of Claws! The world keeps expanding in exciting ways, especially with the Siabra making their debut.
Kairos really grew on me this time around. We dive deeper into his backstory, and while he's still a bit mysterious, his motives started to make sense. The reason this didn’t quite hit 5 stars for me was Morgan’s occasional over-the-top reactions. Her stubbornness is part of her charm, but sometimes she was just too frustrating—like she’d shut down rather than seek answers. I found myself wanting to shake her a bit! 😂 Still, I like her overall, just not as much as in the first book.
On the bright side, Morgan and Kairos have great chemistry. Their banter and interactions were a highlight. I also enjoyed meeting new characters and discovering different types of fae. Here’s hoping the next book keeps up the trend!
Court of Claws definitely turned up the steam compared to Queen of Roses, and it looks like Empress of Fae will be even hotter. This series is a dark fantasy romance, so if that’s your jam, dive in. It’s not super dark in my opinion, but definitely check the trigger warnings if you’re sensitive to that.

Thank you to Starwater Press and NetGalley for the free ARC in exchange of an honest review!
Book 1 absolutely left us on a cliffhanger and Court of Claws picked up right where it left off. Lots and lots of world building and info dump, we’ve moved away from some Camelot lore and much more to learn! Draven is the prince of the Siabra people, another line of fae. There is a Blood Rite to see who will secure the throne of the Siabra and we meet a lot of ruthless competitions. This book we see Morgan and Draven’s relationship grow as well.
It ends on a cliffhanger!
