It went pretty much where I knew it had to go, but it was so unbearably sad that I kept hoping I was wrong. Kudos to the author for making such a dramatic choice, but it was hard not to be too sad to give this a 5⭐️ review. Also, the character of Marvel was so hard to fathom—obviously not supposed to root for this nasty guy, but at times he was good at his job. Again, the author writes characters one doesn’t really see, so the book was a very interesting read.

Bauer manages as she did in her first book to create a tense, atmospheric thriller. Characters are plausibly drawn, and the writing is tight. I have been very pleased with Bauer’s dark psychological thrillers so far.

This was a really exciting book that kept me in suspense until close to the end. It took me forever to read but it was worth it!

This book had everything that I look for in a work of psychological suspense: great writing, memorable characters, a dark atmospheric setting, and a plot with lots of twists and turns. I thought her first book [b:Blacklands|6596845|Blacklands|Belinda Bauer|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1349021712s/6596845.jpg|6790614] was excellent but this was even better.

This was a thrifted book that I soon realized was a sequel after getting about halfway through it. It doesn't really affect reading this one as it focuses on new people but it does briefly mention the story of the first book so that kind of ruined reading the first for me. I went in with high hopes of a new-to-me author and a true crime-based plot at that. While I rated this higher, don't let that fool you, the first half of this book is rather slow to read and not really in a slow-burn way to me. I felt there were unnecessary parts, that definitely come into play later, but I wished it was done in a more exciting way because I almost DNF'd this book twice. The rating of this book comes in the last half. While there is still a good portion that is still slow it builds more into the story that is to follow. By the last quarter of the book, I couldn't put it down. It was a complete flip-flop in style and absolutely a page-turner. It was the ending I needed from this and really shocked me. While you do have to get through the first half of this book - the ending is worth it! Plus, it's not a long book in general. What a surprise this was!
