Page 212 about running and howling wolves is my favourite part of the book. Wagamese gives enough and keeps enough information back due readers to live in the story . I love this book. It promises so much. I wish he'd lived to fully finish it.

Very simply one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. Richard Wagamese was a beautiful storyteller.

So happy to have been left a parting gift by one of Canada's most beloved authors. The passages in this book were beautiful (made even more so by Wesley French's narration of the audiobook). I went into reading this novel knowing it was unfinished - which I expected to REALLY bother me. Surprisingly, I was much more content with it's finish (and follow-up notes/epilogue/essay) than I though I would be. I am saddened knowing I will never fully know the end of the story, but I guess it brings a whole new meaning to the word speculation. I expect we will have a great discussion at my book club meeting in regards to Starlight.

Speechless. Breathless. So sad the book is over. So very sad the earth lost this great author. What a book! The way Wagamese describes the land! The language, the writing - you feel transported. He writes the characters with such softness and depth. It’s truly a beautiful book.

QOTD: Have you ever read an unfinished book? How did you feel about it?
My Review:
Richard Wagamese is one of my favourite authors. His books, Indian Horse and Medicine Walk, are poetic, emotional, and moving. This beloved Canadian author passed away in 2017 and left us with his last incomplete novel called Starlight.
Starlight is the story of Frank Starlight, a phenomenal nature photographer, and Emmy, a woman who is running away from domestic violence. Emmy and her daughter take refuge with Frank and learned to communion with their natural surroundings through his teachings. Emmy and her daughter have been victims for a long time and are not out of the woods as her violent ex is on the hunt to find them and kill them.
Starlight transports its readers on a journey of healing, triumph, and serenity. Although the novel is incomplete, the author’s notes provide a detailed idea on how he planned to end the book, so it is not all a loss.

I wasn’t quite sure what to think of this book. While reading Starlight I couldn’t help comparing it to Medicine Walk which I had read awhile back and loved. This story didn’t come together for me as much as the first. Still not sure if I loved it. That being said, the writing which at times felt more like poetry, was so exquisite I would re read full pages aloud just to hear the words spoken.

Author’s final work, unfinished @ TOD. Abuse survivors learn to trust again in story of incredible depth & honesty. Surprising turns of phrase. Setting its own breathing character. Love it.

It is such a shame that he passed before finishing this book. The story is bittersweet, but so beautifully written. An interesting take on identity, belonging, and love.
