It was hard as hell for me to get through, being extraordinarily essentialistic in approach, but I'm really glad I gave it that fifth attempt because it really does teach you the history of academic ideas about religion.

An overview of religion's nature developing over the centuries, not in terms of specific practices, but in terms of how humans have gone from being religious creatures, to profane.

This book made me think about the sacred & profane of myself, my practices, my experiences, my world. Loved it. One of those game changers, for me.

A hugely influential book about the study of religion. Parts of it are no longer current, but it's still definitely worth reading and having around, due to the way it shaped the field.

Aunque repetitivo, se desenvuelve como una clara introducción sobre el problema de la actualidad de lo religioso. Para ello se remonta a la existencia sacralizada del hombre primitivo y tradicional. De ahí avanza sobre el espacio y tiempo tanto sagrado como profano.

Lo considero un ensayo clásico, totalmente imprescindible para cualquier persona interesada en la historia de las ideas religiosas, o simplemente de las ideas.

Religia și sentimentul de sacru sunt două lucruri esențiale în viața unui om, dar și a unei societăți. Cred că, indiferent de alegerile personale făcute în acest sens, este foarte important să avem cunoștințe elementare despre modul în care oamenii și-au satisfăcut această nevoie de sacralitate de-a lungul timpului, modul în care au intuit anumite realități, în care și-au trăit viața sacră etc. De aceea, Sacrul și Profanul nu este o carte destinată (doar) specialiștilor, ci una potrivită oricărei persoane ce vrea să aibă o cultură de bază. Aceasta se bazează pe niște cursuri ținute de savantul român la universitate.

Though at times this classic gestures at useful or interesting theoretical frameworks, is failure to ground it's subject matter or engage in self critique hardly allow it to transcend the fascist subtext of both it's own content and it's authors life, in contrast to an author like Schmitt.
