It got a bit boring.
And I was reading something much more interesting.
And it was due.
So I stopped.
Maybe I'll come back to it later.

It was a nice bit of historical fiction, and fun to read during October. It wasn't really anything special, but it was enjoyable enough and got me in the Halloween spirit.

i hate to spoil this for some, but this IS fiction...the introduction from allison ellman is, um, part of the book. she didn't really find mary's journal sewn up in a quilt. ok? good.

after her grandmother is hanged for witchcraft, mary sails to america, thinking she will be safe there. she keeps a journal of the passage and journey to the settlement of "beaulah," where she finds the people just as close-minded and witch-spooked as the ones she left behind in england.

after reading rees' "pirates!", i was hoping for some more spunky girl-adventure goodness, and didn't really find it here. mary was brave to keep a journal, but she still doesn't really say what she's thinking-- i had to read between the lines, and i never found out what was really going on with most of the characters. there is another book in the series but i'm not sure if i'll read it...

While the pace is slower than I normally prefer, I very much like the mystical vibes and outdoorsy feel of the entire book. Mary's story and that of those immediately surrounding leave much to wonder about, chief among those questions questions being how many women faced fates like Mary's during the time of witchhunts in America and across the pond?

An old favourite, really happy that I found this and the sequel in a thrift store. Reading that one after this!

Which child is a highly entertaining book. I read it a few years back and I remember I enjoyed it very much, especially the way it pretends to be a "real story" and not a fictional one.
