I finished this book feeling like I got played. Like many other reviewers, I went into this excited for a fun, diverse romance novel and was left disappointed with a mediocre drama with a few romantic moments. Angel is a badass single mom, working like crazy to provide. She's almost finished nursing school, and as long as she can suffer through a few more weeks with her scummy, disgusting bosses, she'll be free to get a nice cushy nursing job. Caleb "Duke" Lewis a the super-famous and super-douchey pitcher for the New York Yankees. After being shot last year, his season is in jeopardy. When their worlds collide, it is more than underwhelming. I absolutely couldn't stand Duke. He was pretentious and rude and boring. I felt like Angel was the only character that was even remotely fleshed out, but you still see zero character development. I felt like I spent the entire novel waiting for the romance to happen and it just never quite got there. I wish I could get back the time I spent on this. I'd recommend taking a hard pass on this one.

I wanted to read this because it had a Puerto Rican as a main character. The ending was predictable. All and all not that great of a story.

I struggled through to this point hoping the story got better, but it truly just got worse and worse.
Misogyny ✅
Fatphobia ✅
Sexual harassment ✅
Roofie jokes ✅
Domestic violence ✅
God knows what would’ve popped up in the other half of the book.

i was hoping for a cute silly little romance book and this was filled with so much crazy drama. why did the book end with them both at the police station, him because his ex girlfriend was blackmailing him because his best friend shot his other best friend while wearing his shoes so she extorted millions of dollars from his dad, then the main girl was there because not only was her boss sexually harassing her and threatening not to pass her on her nursing exam but also he kept giving placebo inhalers to kids and they were dying??? i just wanted a love story!!

Content warning: there is a scene pretty early on (not sure exactly what chapter) that describes the main character walking in on two people having sex, and it goes into pretty graphic detail.
I decided to borrow this because it came up on Libby as an available romcom audiobook, and I was looking for something light and fluffy to listen to on the weekend. I love a good trope-y fake relationship story, so the synopsis reeled me in. Unfortunately, I was only able to get a quarter of the way through. For something that was published in 2019 and is supposed to be contemporary romance, so much of the characters' actions and thoughts just seemed really outdated and cringey. The Duke is such a jerk and the way he views Angel (and how he talks to her) is really gross to read about, and Angel's treatment/opinions of her peers and people who are supposed to be her friends is also pretty awful. I didn't want to get any more frustrated with the characters, so I cut my losses and called it quits.
Pretty sure I won't be returning to this to try again.
Stopped: end of chapter 7

This book was one for the ages. As much as I wanted to like this book, it was a hot mess. The writing felt off and at times it felt like I was reading two different books. I wanted to really like Angel but she made it so hard with her brash personality. I felt like she needed therapy or anger management to deal with all the stress. Then we have Caleb and there was much to be desired when it came to him as well. I didn’t care for him and felt that he really didn’t redeem himself enough for me as I read. There was one scene at the end but it felt so out of character and forced.I honestly didn’t feel a connection between Caleb and Angel as I read. Then there were side stories that were way over the top and made me cringe. I appreciate the light being shown on children with asthma in the Bronx, I grew up there and developed asthma later on. For that reason alone I will be giving this book three stars.

DNF at around 70% - I can’t believe I even lasted this long, but I thought it would get better, not worse & I was a bit interested in the resolution.
Honestly - most of the characters are just horrible/unlikeable!
I’ve been trying to just start books and not read reviews ahead of time, but this time….I should have read the reviews :(

This was not written very well but had the potential to be a great story.

This was not a rom-com, but it was a sweet story about two somewhat complicated people who fell in love. The "pretend to be dating" story was a little contrived. Other than that, much of this story felt realistic (if sad/difficult to read about). I wish had a little deeper backstory for Regina to explain her behavior a little bit.
