Audiobook. Not my favorite Pilcher though still worth a listen. Didn’t love the narrator’s voice. Didn’t suit the character. A quick listen.

No no no. I love Pilcher but this one is NOT a story she should have published. Any hint of first cousin romance is a HARD NO from me.

I had just finished rereading September and I was in the mood for more, so I picked this.
Two things I always say about Rosamunde Pilcher: her books are a bit dated in places and short stories aren't her forte. She needs the space of longer novels. Both of these problems show up big time in The End of Summer.
Overall the story was good - Jane returns home Scotland after living in California to find her childhood crush has become a horrible person, who wants to marry her because he's in debt and she's inheriting the Estate. The problem is they're FIRST COUSINS!!! And book setting is 1960s! Why would you do that? It would have been better if character had been written as a childhood friend instead.
Also Jane has absolutely no goals or ambitions. When her grandmother asks her about plans/ job, she is perfectly content to let her father and grandmother support her. She's the worst kind heroine.
Definitely not Pilcher's best work. But as always Jilly Bond narration is perfect.
