Hard to read, but very good, with three dimensional characters that have a very clear character arc. Honestly, I feel like the ending is a bit anticlimactic, because Zuleiha still remains on Semruk and I feel like she should've gotten a better end.

I was enjoying the book but it started to feel long and my immediate TBR (library books close to due date) was tall.

Our heroine Zuleikha lives a harsh life -- as a peasant woman living with a brutal, unloving husband and mother-in-law, as a Tartar forced into Stalin’s de-kulakization program in the 1930s, and as a struggling survivor exiled in bleakest Siberia. Intense and heavy, Yakhina's novel offers a great glimpse into the atrocities of the Soviet Gulag system.
