this book provides a really interesting archeological examination into the life of alexander the great, mainly in an attempt to explain his childhood. it was a really interesting read but i just started to lose focus in the final 100 pages unfortunately

Fascinating insight, not so much specifically about Alexander, but more the customs of the time and how that may have shaped the young King. Good mix of archaeological findings, battle recounts and sources of scandal.

I enjoyed this non fiction on Alexander The Great that focused on his early years up to the point at which he begins his Persian invasion. I didn't know much at all about this period of his life and there was a lot to tell! The Book also covers quite a bit of his father, Philip's, own exploits which definitely help to paint a better picture of Alexander and the context for which he grew up and was later able to conquer the Persian empire. The author included a lot of commentary on archaeological endeavours that directly relate, sometimes going into too much descriptive detail! However, the author did have a lovely poetic way of describing locations and scenes which made it enjoyable to read.
