Fun book for kids who are just starting to expand their reading / vocabulary. About a 7-9 reading age.

Molly & friends end up in a little prank war with her brother, leaving everyone feeling miserable. Molly tries to cope with her feelings surrounding the war & everything changing.

Despite Molly’s own shortcomings, I remember relating to her very well as a child of the same age. My own thoughts were often reflected in Molly. As an adult, I feel this is a good lesson and an area that might make some children pause. Have they acted in the same manner? Judging others? Teasing?

Various morals are briefly touched upon, and as expected with any AG book — it’s definitely rated G.

"This fighting has to stop," Mrs McIntyre went on. "This is exactly what starts wars--this meanness, anger, and revenge. Two sides decide to get even and end up hurting each other. There's war and fighting enough in the world, and I won't have any more of it in our house." (Chapter 4, War!)

Molly is not a very nice girl (poor Alison!), but Mrs McIntyre is a gem. I read this first when I was 8. I remembered the pictures, but forgot most of the story. Since the story is all about Halloween, I don't think I liked it much then, and I don't love it now.

It definitely hits differently reading it as an adult. I cried reading the nonfiction epilogue and thinking about all the death and destruction of WWII.

I borrowed the Molly series from the library to read to the boys, and David is enjoying them.

I read these when I was a child, but thought this would be a good book for a book review for a book to use in a social studies class with young children.

The American Girl books are always a great read.  And Molly is one of the original three.  Perfect to read with your kids, and still a nice comfort read as an adult.
