Read to Isabel: I had a Molly doll as a kid and remember really loving her books but as I read them to my daughter, while I love that her story in 1944 feels relatable in many ways to me as a girl in 1991 and now my daughter in 2021 I don’t necessarily love Molly as a character. Most of the story she’s either sullen, catty, or cruel. Obviously I don’t believe 9 or 10 year olds need to be likable all the time or even most of the time, but Molly at least in this book has very little to like about her. I feel almost like Maryellen is a bit of a course correct bc they have a lot of similarities but Maryellen’s attitude towards other people is a lot more positive.

Literary value is really a 2 but the nostalgia is so strong, and the history bit at the end raised it up for me. Reading it with my daughter (who doesn't know I have kept my Molly doll from my childhood to give to her when she's a bit older) was very sweet.

I really enjoyed Molly's books. She's not one of my favorites, but I've always liked her. Her movie was great...only problem is they didn't include Halloween when her brother ruined her luau costume :( That was one of my favorite scenes in the books (besides her Miss Victory dance)

Sydney’s review:
“When can we read the next one?! I love Molly! I wouldn’t want to live during the war. I see London, I see France, I can see your underpants!” Followed by intense laughing fits. Pretty sure that was her favorite part. She laughed so much!

Story takes place during WWII at Halloween. My daughter thought the antics between Molly and her siblings were hilarious.

I read this series many times when I was younger. I'm now listening to them on audiobook for the first time!

Molly is my favorite American Girl. I got the first book for my daughter in hopes that she will one day enjoy the American Girl series, as well. The story is complete, there are lessons to be learned, and the end of the book gives a brief synopsis on WW2 that is easy to understand.
