I’m afraid that I don’t really know what drunkenness is.

For being nonfiction, this was a quick and light read. It's interesting to imagine some of the wilder drunken scenarios the author describes throughout the book, and I actually learned more than I expected about prohibition in the USA.

Unfortunately, the authorial voice was perhaps a bit too light, and made occasional use of offensive terms and phrases. Sometimes they were clearly sarcastic or meant as indirect quotation, but sometimes they weren't.

an entertaining and selective trip through humanity's obsession with being drunk - a different story to that of alcohol.

I thoroughly enjoyed the audiobook version of A Short History of Drunkenness, read by Mark Forsyth. It's a comedic history of all things alcohol related and I loved the little stories about what alcohol (and drunkenness) means to different cultures around the world. This audiobook was a really fun way to learn the history behind something that is so commonplace today. I highly recommend this as a fun way to learn some new facts!

This book is cute and pithy, and so might make a good secret santa gift, but it's not the kind of thing I would tell people who are genuinely curious is a good starting point.

Assuming I ever get to go out and get drunk in a bar again, I will have some fun facts to slurringly recount to strangers.
