Ancient history and anthropology come together to give us a fast-paced overview of drunkenness throughout time and culture. Forsyth spends just enough time on each topic to inform, but not bore/overwhelm. Chapters range from Viking Parties, to Russian vodka, American Prohibition, Early Human Evolution, and so much more.

His style is witty and snarky. I found the chapters on Prohibition, Gin, and the Wild West most fascinating. Also of interest was how he set the record straight on the differences between an Inn, a Pub, and a Tavern.

This book in three words: Informative, Interesting, Humorous

Notes/Quotes and other things to remember: Early ale had to be drank through a straw because there was so much gunk floating on top (ew).

So, I'm torn on this book. It was interesting to see the progression/regression of alcohol throughout history, but the narrative was written in a very "tongue in cheek" type of quippy humor that just wears on you. It's like the kind of writing you would use in a blog, but for an entire book. Would I recommend it? Maybe. If you were looking to have some neat-o facts next time you're at a party (did you know that Prohibition was not really about banning alcohol but instead banning the saloon aspect?) sure.
