"I'll break this lock, but I will demand my freedom from his grasp. I'm not some slave to do his bidding, and I will make sure he knows it."
The synopsis of this book is what caught my eye. I do love magical Academy stories, and this one was right up my alley. At first, I was extremely confused about what was going on with Roxy, Terry, the shadowmaster, and the rest of the group. I felt that I was dropped into the world without explanation. Which honestly, is exactly what Roxy was going through. The writing paired well with the inner thoughts of Roxy and her as a person. As Roxy grew in her skills, so did the writing. I find that quite impressive.
The other characters, while some were assholes, looking at you, Miles, and George, I did like the tension and the development of them. All the side characters held important pieces of the puzzle as well as made a difference. It didn't feel that the characters were insignificant. Each one Roxy came in contact with truly helped her grow. Whether it was in her strength or magic. For me, as much as I adore Roxy, I adore Lorrie as much, if not more!!! That is a best friend. That is a ride or die!!
One thing that honestly bothered me about the story, and it's just a personal thing, I didn't like how Roxy seemed to lead Miles on. At first, the back and forth between them was hot. Hate can turn into love real quick. But after a certain point, when they were getting close, she kept flip-flopping. I wish she would have been a little more forthcoming, but she did eventually tell him she wasn't interested in him like that. Granted, it was after she started falling for Levi, but she still did it. I give some mad props to Miles as a man to not have gone crazy when Roxy didn't want to be with him! That NEVER happens!!! So it makes me love him more 🩷
There is so much to unravel on who Roxy truly is, what happened to her bloodline, and how she's going to fare against Erubus. She's so strong herself, but she also has the support of her friends. The author really showed how having friends who believe in you can help! I look forward to seeing what the rest of the series holds.

Thanks to Storyorigin for the eARC of Alchemy Academy.
Alchemy Academy is book one in
a series. It starts with orphan Roxy from London, who stowes away on a boat that happens to be taking the passengers to a magical island.
Though she's not magical the Shadowmaster allows her to stay.
There's obviously more to our characters than what is revealed.
The character building in this story is great and you can see the potential with the series. The twist on
the paranormal elements are intriguing and I really like the writing style. I look forward to reading more by Jess Peters

A really cool new take on academy books. We are presented with a girl who has nothing and doesn't belong. She soon finds that maybe she does belong but not in the way she wants.
The story was well thought out and had some excellent plot twists. I can see myself waiting for the next one.
