One of my favourite Miagrets of the whole series, one which follows the murder of a restaurateur and former criminal. A very interesting case even if the plot and solution were quite rudimentary. Its the cast and location that are the stars of the show, some entertaining ones in this from The Flea to the drunken husband of the concierge.

For me this one had it all, a quintessential Maigret.

and now there is one...

Very much enjoyed this one.
It’s somewhat different from the other Maigret books that I’ve read, as in: Maigret feels a lot more chill, grounded and just looking to enjoy life (I’ve never seen him mentioning beers so many times

Simenon is a wonderful writer and really enjoyed this clever piece of French detective fiction. Short and sweet with a little mystery

Dull and disappointing. Beside one early jarring shift from “why would anyone wish him harm” to “yeah he was at the center of a circle of terrible people”, there is no intrigue here. Who you think did it did it fit the boring reasons you might guess, and the attempt to provide a novel hook via an eccentric informant is just... bleh.
