Spring 2020 (Animorphs Read 2020);
Into the mind of Tobias, our red-tailed hawk, we spend a lot of this one getting to see the war in Tobias heart/mind/soul/body for who he is now. Whether he's a hawk. Whether he's a boy. Whether it would be easier to let his humanity slip away. Whether there are things more important to being human than looking it (especially juxtaposed to Controllers who still look human, but *definitely are not*). I really like that they have chipped a tiny bit into this and hope they do continue to deep dive into his further books.
I did love getting to see more of Rachel through Tobias' eyes, because we all know I'm here to basically fall into love with Rachel and Tobias is already well into that job. I like that with him we do see the more sensitive side of her sometimes.

I’ve been sleeping on this series, it’s so good! I really love the switch up of POVs in each books. Tobias’s POV made me sad with his inner turmoil of being stuck in the morph, and when he lost himself for a couple days I was like noooo my son!! 😭 Also his home situation with his aunt and uncle is so crappy like wtf 😭 It does get a little tiresome though with the same intro 3 books in a row where whoever’s POV it is they say along the lines of “My name is X (or maybe I’m telling you a fake name), can’t tell you my last name, where I live etc because the yeerks/controllers are everywhere.” I really hope this won’t be the case with every book 💀 Other than that, I really enjoy the action sequences! The last few chapters had me so stressed and invested I couldn’t put it down. I was happy Tobias managed to take down the supply ship and thought “yes we’re gonna end on a high note” just for them to rip it away with the poor female hawk!! Like she just escaped captivity just to die by the hands of some ugly af aliens??? rip, fly high 🥲

In this book the kids learn that a Yeerk ship is regularly collecting water for the mothership from a nearby lake. The kids decide to morph into fish with the intention of being sucked up by the ship. Once inside the ship, they plan to turn off the cloaking device that lets the ship travel unseen through the atmosphere, thereby revealing the presence of the Yeerks to the public.
Unfortunately it doesn't happen according to plan, as the kids are unable to get out of the water tank inside the ship. Visser Three and co. also suspect that the hovering hawk Tobias is an Andalite, and set out to kill him with their Dracon beams. Tobias cleverly devises a strategy that instead sees the Yeerks destroy their own ship with their Dracon beams. Unfortunately a female hawk that Tobias had rescued a few days earlier is caught in the cross fire, amputated and presumably killed by a Dracon beam.
--
Damn, I'd forgotten how compelling these books are! They may have been written for children, but I'm still on the edge of my seat everytime the kids have a near miss with Visser Three. I'm also enjoying the way each book is narrated by a different character; we get insight into each kid's fears and vulnerabilities.
Given that this book is narrated by Tobias, it's more of a tearjerker than the previous two. We see Tobias missing life as a human, struggling against his hawk instincts when he saves a female hawk, and grieving when said hawk meets its demise at the hands of the Yeerks. I never finished either the TV or book series so I have no idea how it ended, and I can only hope the Andalites were able to give him his body back <3

I just want to give Tobias a hug ok. I like how this book focused a lot more of the psychological thought process of Tobias not morphing back in time. His fight between believing he is still human and not succumbing to the hawk side fully.
