I feel like the book missed the mark for audience, mostly because I couldn't tell who the intended audience was. Despite the violence, the story seemed more suited to 8- to 10-year-olds than teens. It was both too dull (first half, which was still decent reading) and too silly (second half) for older readers, though the preternatural ability of the protagonist animals to understand people combined with the senseless slaughter of war might make for a confusing blend of fantasy and history for young readers.

Much hay is made (no pun intended) of how cunning Przewalski's horses are as a species, yet the Nazis hunt down 30 with no effort at all; only 2 escape to become hero horses. Kalinka is great at chess, remembers all kinds of things she learned from her father or school, and is a natural artist, but she's made to seem unnecessarily dumb and helpless at times just so the dog and horses can be smart instead. She was the least believable character: ostensibly a heroic survivor of trauma, but her logic and expositional dialogue read more like a young child playing with their toys. I think I'd have preferred the trauma left her mute. Every time I managed to fill one plot hole with a flimsy excuse, a new one opened up. The whole thing got a bit tiresome.

If people trying to save horses from the military is your preferred genre, the 1995 HBO movie "In Pursuit of Honor," along with this article from the L.A. Times, may be a more grounded choice.

I’ve had this book on my to-read list for years, because it’s set in Ukraine, a country I love. This is certainly a young adult book and even gives more like children’s book vibes sometimes. Extremely intelligent animals who find ways to communicate with their humans, people who are simplistically good, etc. It’s not a bad story, especially if you’re interested in Ukraine or horses, but there isn’t much that’s remarkable about it either. The characters are simple, the writing is fine, the metaphors are underdeveloped.

Ο Μαξ είναι ένας μοναχικός επιστάτης αλόγων ου καλείται κατά τη διάρκεια του δεύτερου παγκοσμίου πολέμου να συμβιώσει στα άγρια εδάφη της ουκρανία με το καθεστώς των ναζί οι οποίοι θέλουν να εξοντώσουν τη σπάνια ράτσα άγριων αλόγων Πρζεβάλσκι.Η ζωή του θα άλλαξει όταν οι δρόμοι του διασταυρωθούν με την μικρή Καλίνκα ένα ορφανό κορίτσι που βρίσκει καταφύγιο κοντά στον Μάξ.Η έντονη σχέση που θα αναπτύξει η ίδια με τα άλογα θα την αναγκάσει να πραγματοποιήσει ένα επικύνδυνο ταξίδι μέσα στον αδυσώπητο χειμώνα με μοναδική συντροφιά τα άλογα, προκειμένου να τα σώσει από την μελλοντική εξαφάνιση τους.
Αναρωτιέμαι αν απλά πρόκειται για ένα πολύ κακό βιβλίο ή εγώ είμαι πολύ αναίσθητη για να νιώσω το οτιδήποτε.Συνήθως οι ιστορίες με ζώα πάντα με συγκινούν και πάντα με επηρεάζουν ειλικρινά δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω τι έφταιξε εδώ.
Αυτό που ουιαστικά βρήκα αρνητικό είναι το γεγονός ότι ο συγγραφέας δεν κατάφερε να αποδώσει τη βαθιά αλληλεπίδραση ανάμεσα στα άλογα και στους ανθρώπους και γι αυτό φταίει σαφώς ο παιδαριώδης και υπερβολικά απλοικός τρόπος γραφής.Αν ήθελε να μπορούσε να γράψει ένα εικονογραφημένο παραμύθι και όχι ένα βιβλίο που απευθύνεται σε ηλικίες από δέκα ετών και πάνω καθώς σε αυτές τις ηλικίες στοχεύει, με τα θέματα τα οποία θίγει, δείχνοντας σε όλο το μεγαλείο τη σκληρότητα των ναζιστών, αλλά υποτιμώντας τους αναγνώστες με την βαρετή του ισορία.
Οι ήρωες που εμφανίζονται δεν έχουν πραγματικά κανενός είδους ενδιαφέρον ούτε σκιαγραφούνται καθόλου, όπως άλλωστε και τα άλογα για τα οποία μαθαίνουμε περισσότερο εγκυκλοπαιδικές πηροφορίες παρά τον ρόπο με τον οποίο αλληλεπιδρούν άνθρωποι και άλογα.Όσο για την αποστολή της Καλίνκα και το τέλος του βιβλίου, ούτε εκεί βρήκα κατι ενδιαφέρον γιατί ουσιαστικά δεν υπάρχει καμία απολύτως κορύφωση.Ειλικρινά δεν ξέρω αν είμαι αντικειμενική αλλά ποιός θα έβρισκε ενδιαφέρον να διαβάζει επί 100 και βάλε σελίδες για ένα κορίτσι που παριπλανιέται σε ένα δάσος με ένα τσούρμο άλογα χωρίς να υπάρχει καμία απολύτως εξέλιξη ή ανατροπή;
Αισθάνομαι ότι κάποια στιγμή θα πρέπει να ξαναδιαβάσω ακόμη μια φορά το συγκεκριμέν βιβλίο, μιας και προσπέρασα αρκετές σελίδες και ίσως η άποψη μου δεν είναι απολύτως σωστή αν και η γενική εικόνα που πήρα δεν αλλάζει.Ο Φίλιπ Κερ δημιούργησε απλώς ένα απλοικό παραμύθι, χωρίς καμία πρωτοτυπία που δεν θα καταφέρει να συγκινήσει ούτε τον πιο ευαίσθητο, ούτε καν ένα πεντάχρονο.Θα μπορούσε να αποτελέσει ιδέα μόνο για ένα κινούμεν σχέδιο αν και αυτό ακόμη θα το έβλεπα σε fast forward.

The Winter Horses takes place in Ukraine during World War II and is about a young Jewish girl named Kalinka and her fight for survival. I really enjoyed the plot, the characters, and the writing. I especially liked Kalinka's relationship with Max, Taras, Borte, and Temujin. It was a bittersweet story. I ended up giving it 4 out of 5 stars and a 7/10.

It is really difficult for me to review this book. First of all, I had NO idea this was a YA/children book. Knowing the kind of books Philip Kerr normally writes, I did not expect this

The story itself is kind of charming (in the beginning) and it kept me going (to a certain point). Up until Kalinka arrived on the scene. Ok, is there another character in the history of literature who is more perfect than our dear little Kalinka? I mean, the girl is a chess prodigy, fluent in German (which she learned in no time, but found boring), she is a horse whisperer, she is an amazing artist (who knows how to make her own paints out of nothing), she is brave, she doesn't complain or whine, she knows what to do in medical emergency, etc. I can go on and on and on. Kalinka is sooo sweet, she gave me at least 5 cavities.

It is hard to understand how old Kalinka is or meant to be. I could have sworn that somewhere in the beginning it was indicated that she was around 15-16 (I might be wrong about the actual number) Even if I am wrong about her being 15-16, I believe she is meant to be a teenager. However, sometimes she acts like a much older individual while speaking like a 6 year old. It was so weird.

The story itself started to get ridiculous early on. Even allowing for magical realism or for the fact that this is a children book, it was very silly. Here are some examples: a German officer apologizing to a Ukrainian peasant and inviting him to dinner, a horse is able to count approaching German motorcycles (and with that being said, a horse who is able to tell a difference between German and a non-German), a horse who is able to predict how a human mind will work in a certain situation and what that human’s actions will be. There are more examples like that throughout the book.

Definitely written more for a teen reader.
