As usual, Feist's trilogies start out OK, but don't be lulled into a false sense of security: none of the stuff set up here gets resolved satisfyingly. Full review: https://fakegeekboy.wordpress.com/2013/09/12/dungeons-dragonball-z/

What plot? The point of the book does not get across until the very end and it seems thrown together not very well or with much care.

Might come back to this one because something was up here.
I don't know what it was: whether I started this too soon after finishing The Eye of the World, whether I need to read other books before this one, or maybe the story is just really bland and forgettable.
What I do know is that I kept coming back to this story forgetting what had just happened, and I felt lost the whole time.

All the books based in the world of Midkemia have been very engaging and enjoyable to read and this is no exception.
The opening of this novel had me checking if I had opened the right book and was a nice call back to where this all began.
The characters are mostly ones previously seen in other novels, so their personalities and mannerisms are familiar, while the new characters are introduced in a very natural way.
There are many threads to the storyline, which is quite an involved plot with interweaving connections between the various threads, though these can be very subtle and therefore not noticed until much later.
This is a rich world with plenty of interesting characters and a story that will keep you turning pages to see what happens next, as will the epilogue setting up the next book.

Disappointing lack of female characters...Not surprised.

This first book of the trilogy uses the previous trilogy as a foundation - if you haven't read that one, you'll be lost here. But Feist again introduces new characters who we quickly come to value and care about, and weaves a new story around them. I enjoyed how the tension of the series is building, and you know you're headed towards something epic. The conclusion of this one doesn't disappoint, and yet points you to "more to come."
