As hard as it is to imagine improving on the ancient Greeks , Ted Hughes seems to do it effortlessly.

Research for the Silent Patient

I don’t really know how to rate this. I didn’t read this exact translation but I just read Alcestis because I finished The Silent Patient and wanted to see it. I guess it didn’t live up to expectations. I love Greek mythology and Greek literature is so dense but very interesting. I like the character of Alcestis partly because of who I built her to be in my mind. I think the play could’ve been a little longer at the end and I don’t know if I really understood it at all but it was a quick read just for context for the book I read yesterday. I need to get better at reading Greek literature because I’m so fascinated by it, so I thought I’d try this one out.

I must admit that sitting down to read 1200 pages of Euripides is a bit daunting. Well, I finished the first one...

Admetus has to die for some reason unless he can find a substitute. His parents and children and friends refuse, but his wife, Alcestis agrees, not wanting to go on living without him. Then Heracles shows up and brings her back from the underworld to him.
