Skimmed the climax, but don't feel like I missed much. The world-building feels awkward, the writing is simultaneously overwrought and clumsy, and the author treats female characters rather poorly. Only finished it because I was hoping for some redemption, but no.

I feel like I should be really enjoying this. It's exactly my sort of thing. Rich world building. Complex plot. But...

I find myself looking at it the same way I did Wheel of Time: Is anything ever going to happen?

I suppose I would be more forgiving if the characters were engaging, but other than Empra Iluris I find them more outlines than characters. Good king, evil priest, devoted brother, and not much beyond that. More time with Iluris would be interesting, but not enough to keep pushing through.

Kevin J. Anderson's tale of a world slowly drifting into mayhem is a ride I'm dying to do over and over.

I just felt like the author wasn't interested in character development. It just felt flat to me
