This was so close to being a 5 starred read for me but a few dissonant notes were hard for me to look past. The writing is absolutely beautiful, poetic, yet not overdone- credit to the author and the translator. The characters were memorable, flawed, and most of all real. Having a protagonist who loves old people, and music, and works in a nursing home is something I haven't come across often and it was perfectly executed in this novel. It could easily have been something else, but it wasn't. Both Justine and Helene's stories were compelling and, at times, heartbreaking. I don't think I'll be forgetting this book on a Sunday or any other day soon.

Some quotes:

“Helene told me her whole life. But in jig-saw puzzle form. As if she’d given me the finest object in her home but had broken it into a thousand pieces first, without meaning too.” pg. 21

“Listening has to take priority, because silence is never far away”
pg. 33

“I tell myself that what I don’t find pretty about me will one day be someone’s beautiful. Someone who’ll love me and become my artist. Who’ll continue me. Who’ll take me from rough sketch to masterpiece… we’re all someone’s Michelangelo; the trouble is, we have to meet them.” pg. 72

“I find potential emotions crippling. Only things that can never exist interest me.” pg. 253

"I'm always being told that when an old person dies a library burns to the ground, I'm saving a little of the ashes." pg. 290

Couldn't get into it. The writing was a little off. I loved Fresh Water for Flowers though

Fine historier som hører samnen, og med en litt annerledes slutt enn forventet

Very convoluted storyline. Be prepared to pay attention. However, the inner turmoils of families and love are on full display through, so if that’s your kind of book, read on!
