“Your explanation for anything slightly odd is aliens,' said Lister. 'You lose your keys, it's aliens. A picture falls off the wall, it's aliens. That time we used up a whole bog roll in a day, you thought that was aliens.”

The first part was largely directionless, but the characters started getting cohesive goals from the second part on, so the book became progressively better. All through, this was a hilarious read. I knew there was a TV show of the same name, but had no idea the novel was based on the TV show. Moreover, the audiobook narrator, who is fantastic, is the guy who plays Rimmer in the show it seems. All the more reason to check out the original.

I did not watch the classic low-budget British sci-fi sitcom, but right from the very first chapter was hooked on to this retelling. Written in the same vein as Hitchhiker, it is British humor at its best. Of course, the story was 3 million years in the making!

This is an excellent read, I'm on at least my third time through. While much of this story is straight out of the series it does contain some notable changes. There's some new content too, largely centred around Lister's arrival on Red Dwarf.
I love the tv series, but somehow I think both the scifi and the style of comedy work better in book form. The scifi concepts take up a more centre stage role in the book and the humour isn't strategically placed to allow for a laugh track.
Chris Barrie does an entirely sensational narration and it's worth checking out the audiobook just to hear how well he does every other character's voice.

Probably the funniest books I've ever read. A lot of the plot and the jokes are in the TV series of the same name, which is the reason I picked this up.
