β’ Social commentary is woven into both the plot and dialogue naturally. Sisterhood and friendship are core themes, which give an uplifting feeling to dark subjects.
β’ *Most* of the plot twists are predictable. It takes a surprising amount of time before the disappearance occurs, but that gives the readers time to get to know the character better.
β’ The ending is beautiful and heart-wrenching (but hopeful), even if it doesn't make sense. Seriously, prepare to suspend your disbelief from around the climax onward.
β’ The protagonists' journeys are rewarding. Side characters are developed decently, and some experience growth too. There are occasions where the characters' motivations don't make sense, and I assume we are meant to classify it as teenage stupidity.
Graphic: Addiction, Alcoholism, Bullying, Emotional abuse, Mental illness, Misogyny, Rape, Sexism, Sexual content, Violence, Abortion, Murder, and Alcohol
Moderate: Panic attacks/disorders and Vomit
Minor: Body shaming

so iβve sat down to review this book a couple times and always got distracted and didnβt finish. but i gave it 3 stars because yes, i enjoyed it, but no i probably wouldnβt read it again. it was a cute YA thriller mystery that i probably wouldβve enjoyed more as a teenager. but of course i did love the queer romance parts of it. that being said, the book felt a tad too dramatic for me and i canβt believe that Mila was murdered over cross country running and wanting to win. idk i love running but uh not murder or leave your teammate for dead muchβ¦.definitely written for a younger audience.

i'm giving this 4 stars purely based on entertainment.
as a mystery, this book was really lacking. the crime didn't occur until around halfway through, which isn't in itself a bad thing. it was just the lack of buildup that really got me.
stella was really endearing to me. she has some serious empathy issues, but something about her came across as raw and honest. like i can imagine other 17 year olds behaving in exactly the same way as her. ellie...not so much. in order not to spoil i wont go in further, but yeah. she was not my favorite!
the weakest character in this book was mila. we didnt see enough of her for me to care about what happened to her. and honestly, i didnt understand how she became so close with stella and ellie. she was just kind of flat.
i honestly think this book suffered by being a mystery. this book has very similar themes to other YA contemporaries. i really wanted to see more of stella's character development, but because of the constraints of the mystery element, it wasn't possible.
so yes, this is 4 stars for stella steckler. she CARRIED

I have been tearing through both YA and adult mysteries this year. Definitely a YA one with all the extremes that YA lit brings with it, which is both the best and awful thing about it. So many layers of awful people or maybe just people who are all a bit of both good and evil. I like that female teen characters are now consistently deeper than the good girl or gossip girl stereotypes. These girls want to win and will go to Great lengths to do it.
