I really enjoyed this book, much like the last. The characters were just as engaging, and seeing Tris' story more was nice. I do think these books can be a little superficial, not delving as much into character motivations and backstory, but that is to be expected with a younger audience in mind. I view these first four as character introductions, and hopefully deeper character analysis will happen in the later books. This book was fast-paced, unpredictable, and just a fun read.

This book was much more action packed then the first. I had a hard time stopping to do the important things like feeding myself or sleeping. Whoops. It is such an easy read but so good still. I really enjoyed it. I think this series is perfect when you need a break from heavier reading. It goes by quickly and satisfyingly. I love it! Definitely a growing fan of Tamora Pierce. Starting the 3rd book IMMEDIATELY. I even brought it with me to appointments today as I knew I wouldn’t be able to wait long and would want to start right away. Sorry neglected cross stitch. I’ll get to you eventually. ⚡️

Second in the four book series is again a struggle, and not something I found I could get involved in. Tempted to give it away but I'll probably read the next two anyway.

This was overwhelmingly disappointing. I've enjoyed many of Pierce's other books, but I don't know if I'll continue with this series. I barely made it to the end of this book and I'm not entirely convinced that it was worth sticking it out.

I'm usually extremely liberal about what I would consider appropriate content for a children's book, but some things in this book (see content warnings below) crossed the line even for me (I didn't actually even realize I had a line that could be crossed here, and...now I know that I do :-/ )

content warning: rape references (in the context of an event that someone remembers from the past), graphic violence/murder

The Circle of Magic is not my favorite of Pierce's series, but this is my favorite book from the series and its companion series.
