Tris, and Briar, Daja, and Sandry, must face their magic and their fears when pirates attack Winding Circle. I appreciate the hints scattered throughout -- suspicious behavior, new magical skills, conversations captured on the wind -- that all come together in the end.
Only complaint is that it feels like the final few chapters speed along to an overly quick resolution. (I'm sure if these books were written today, they'd be much longer with more depth into what's happening and why!)

Graphic: Violence and Murder
Moderate: Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Slavery

I always love this series. I'd hesitate to say more than the Tortall books, because they're so different, but there's something both beautiful and brutal about these books that both heals and hurts. Reading through this one with the Mark Reads community was especially hard at the moment, because of the family themes that it explores for Tris and the discussions that came up on one particular post about dysfunctional families. Still, the way the relationships that are formed in these books are so real and wonderful and that's why I love them.

I enjoyed continuing this series! I mostly listened to this while washing dishes and playing Animal Crossing which made it super cozy. I liked the character development and depth added into this book. Briar is still my favorite character but the others (and especially Tris since the focus was on her this time!) are growing on me. I adore all of the teachers/mentors and their relationships with the kids. This series is just so heartwarming and nice <3 though there were some darker elements and higher stakes with the pirates which was interesting! Pierce does not shy away from death despite her younger audience. I also love the commentary the kids have about wondering if they're still kids since they're mages. Power, control, and consequences as themes were explored briefly in this installment. Overall, solid!

Continuing the story of the Circle of Magic, the four mages-in-training Briar, Sandry, Tris and Daja have learned how to control their magic a little better, and how to combine their powers and function as one strong mage. I liked this book better than the first one because there's more action (pirates attack! "boomstones" explode!) and the characters have been established so you know who's who.

Once again, and excellent entry from Pierce. Good characters. Solid plot. Excellent development.

Tris's family makes me so sad. But her found family is so good.
