This was a very enjoyable, funny, informative read. I wish it was longer! It feels more like an overview than a deep dive (which, I mean, is right in the title) but it definitely sent me down multiple information rabbit holes about how the pursuit and use of alcohol helped shape various world cultures.

I have always been more interested in the daily life of people than the big historical events, I found this book fun and informative. It can make a good gift for someone with a sense of humour and appreciation for the magical powers of alcohol :)

A fun, interesting, and wonderful little book. I appreciate the author's focus on what drinking culture was like at all sorts of different times and different places. Would have been a much better book had it been twice as long, or longer, and gone more indepth instead of skimming the surface.

My pint of reference for all micro histories on niche topics is Mary Roach and this does live up to that standard

An enjoyable romp through our past as drunks, though I find it curious that Forsyth didn't make the connection between "we developed a gene to allow us to drink" and "water was pretty deadly to us, so we drank alcohol" as an evolutionary pressure towards our drinking genes. This despite the fact that he definitely brought up both the evolutionary pressure, and the water thing. It was just interesting, and probably indicative of the amount of histories I've been reading lately.
