From my blog Auntie Spinelli Reads

Demon Love Spell was so cute! It's been awhile since I've read any manga, so I thoroughly enjoyed this one. (This is my first manga review, by the way ^.^) It actually reminded me a LOT of Mugen Spiral, which is one of my favorites.

I love romance stories that start off as hatred. LOVE them. As far as romance goes, that's my favorite kind. I know, I'm weird. :p But I think that's why I enjoyed this one so much, because they were stuck with each other against their will and fell for each other reluctantly.

Miko was cute! When Kagura gave her crap, she gave it right back. I loved the banter between them! I giggled out loud several times. And Kagura was sexy, of course (and freaking adorable in his mini form), despite being a womanizer - although that was part of being an incubus. He was very matter-of-fact about his...er, needs....because he didn't see anything wrong with it.

The art was really good, too! When it comes to manga, the art makes or breaks it for me. I am extreeeemely picky about it. If I can't stand to look at the artwork, I'm not going to bother reading it. I like a certain type of art (examples of favorite art: DNAngel, Vampire Knight, Chrono Crusade) and this one fell into that category.

And the ending? Whaaaaaat?! Do I sense a love triangle in the next volume???? I can't wait to get my hands on it so I can find out. If you like manga and are a fan of shoujo (and don't mind a few steamy scenes), I recommend giving this one a try!

Really enjoying it but it reminds me quite a bit of Blackbird. Not sure which one came out first but since I read Blackbird first this one seems a little derivative. Demons in love with a human girl. Other demons will hurt you, devour you, if you aren't with me, a more powerful demon.

A bit cliche in the storyline but I liked the art and characters so I'll probably continue this series.

So I remember writing in a post a while ago that my favourite kind of Manga are the dark and twisted ones. Whilst I stand by this I find myself gravitating more towards the fun and a little tongue in cheek series now. That's exactly how I'd describe Demon Love Spell, it's cheeky but an awful lot of fun.

It follows Miko, a shrine maiden that has never had much luck banishing spirits. Until she meets Kagura, a demon that feeds off women's passion and love. In a twist of events Miko manages to cast a spell and bind his powers...but this leaves her vulnerable to the attacks of other spirits. Kagura and Miko end up in a mutually beneficial relationship. Kagura protects Miko and in return she allows him to remain in his full power state.

If you've ever read or watched Seven Deadly Sins the humour in that is very similar to Demon Love Spell. It borders on the slightly uncomfortable and often ends up with a male character somewhere they shouldn't be, if you catch my drift. Seven Deadly Sins, whilst it is a great series overall takes this to a degree that makes you cringe a little, Demon Love Spell manages to toe the line better. But most manga/animes are usually like this, you only need to look at the covers for most to see this. It's like the wonder woman thing, why is she fighting a battle with next to no armour on? It makes no sense! Poor wardrobe choices aside I really enjoy this Manga volume and will definitely be picking up the rest of the series soon.

You know, the one good thing about Mayu Shinjo's recent work is that she appears to have caught a sense of humour about it. She used to write the usual Gross Shoujo paradigm: tall, dark, walking sexual harassment case meets the innocent and embodies rape culture in his pursuit of her. Now -- well, okay, she still writes that dude but she's also equally dedicated to mocking him. I'm pretty sure her thought process for this manga went something like 'incubus are hot! but you know what would be hilarious? what if a shrine maiden shrunk him down to pocket doll size and dressed him up accordingly? yep, that would definitely be gr8. :DDDD' I appreciate work written for the lulz just as much as the next girl. 2 stars

I was not expecting this to be so funny! Toes the line perfectly between taking the piss out of supernatural love story manga, and being a really bloody good one in its own right. And Kagura's chibi form is actually adorable.
