Okay first of all I absolutely loved the gender fluid representation in this book and the way that Arcady explained it to Everen. This book had me extremely confused the first couple of chapters but the more I read the further I got sucked into this world of dragons and humans. The tension and romance from this book was amazing, the little hints of attraction from both characters to fully completing the bond had me in a choke hold. Everen didn’t fulfill his prophecy to save his beloved and I absolutely love that. I will definitely be buying the second book when It releases as their story is not over yet and they better find a way back to each other and fall in love.

As with any fantasy, it starts a little slow and the world building takes a minute to get into. So worth it though.

~~ SPOILERS BELOW~~

~ look away ~

I did NOT see that twist at the end coming (regarding Malgren aka Ammil the former last male dragon) and I need to know more. Why did he flame everything in the archives?! How did he end up back in the human world?! Why/how was his claw cut off and when?

Im a little frustrated that we seem to be back at square one, with the only real difference being that our two MCs have more knowledge now. I guess we will see what book two brings!

this book was kind of weird idk what specifically but there was something about it… i didn’t connect like i usually do but it was enjoyable enough. i thought the povs were interesting and everen talking about arcady saying ‘you’ instead of their name was new but i didn’t mind it

Just wasn’t connecting with me.  The style was very bland snd a bit clunky.  I knew I was in trouble about 3 sentences in when I had to read it about 5 times to parse what the character was saying.

The use of non-binary pronouns and not using genders seemed haphazard.   The dragon referred to himself as "male" and "he/him" but referred to female humans as "having mammary glands".  I'm not quite sure what the reason was?  Maybe I didn’t reach that explanation yet?  It was just odd.  I think I needed more "rules" up front than what I got.

This is one of those books where I have to conclude I am not the target audience. I can appreciate it is well written, with some clever writers tricks in terms of tensing and language use. But for me, I am not a big romance person and there was too much of that in this. Enemies to lovers is one of my least favourite tropes out there and it basically forms the centerpiece of this story.

We follow the stories of a dragon and a thief. The dragons have all been banished to an alternate realm, but during a magical convocation the thief calls one across from their realm to this one. The shapeshifting dragon trope is also used here (another one I am not especially fond of - let dragons be dragons!) so the dragon blends into society. The main plot follows a heist involving the dragon and the thief along with attempts for the dragons to return to this world. These are all aspects I enjoyed, but for such a character driven story I have to engage with the characters and I struggled here, and I always find these romance heavy things kind of cringey.

There is some clever use of language around gender here, which I do appreciate. The thief is never specified as to which gender they actually are, and there are multiple allusions to gender fluidity in the story. This was well done and in a way that did not feel forced or shoe horned in.

Ultimately, I can appreciate this was well written, but it played with tropes that I am not particularly fond of which ultimately detracted from my overall enjoyment. YMMV.
