Genuinely one of the worst stories I've ever read, almost certainly the worst published. I usually would just remove a book from my account if I didn't make it to at least 5%, but I refuse to have put myself through that for nothing.

To say it was edgy is the understatement of the century. On the scale of edginess, it started out at 15/10 and just kept climbing. It felt like the author thought about the most grimdark setting and situation she could imagine and wrote it. Except, most people haven't experienced an upbringing (if you could call it that) nearly this traumatic and I'd bet a fortune that the author hasn't either. You can write things you haven't experienced, but you have to find a way to make it feel realistic. There is absolutely horrific stuff going on in that first 3% and yet I walked away feeling... mildly disturbed and uncomfortable. It just didn't have the kind of gravity that the situation requires. I understand that that's difficult to achieve, but it'd probably be easier if it didn't start out at max edginess. Generally poor writing.

Also, as others have noted, the author seems to be the kind of writer who thinks: creating new fantasy words = worldbuilding. It does not. Especially if those new words are just adding "god" to everything.

This book gets an extra quarter star for the premise, but that's the best I can do, sorry.

I felt like I was having a stroke while reading this book.

A good start to the trilogy. I think I might have enjoyed it more if Hekat wasn't such an unlikable protagonist... but I'm looking forward to reading the next two in the series.

I found this book a bit unusual. I was shocked I liked it so much. The writing is the kind that I feel like a reader will either hate or love. I found it unique and refreshing.
The story spans a lifetime from the viewpoint of three characters, mainly Hekat.
I have two complaints but it’s not enough to dissuade me from recommending this book to others or from reading book 2.
1. Their was some spelling errors at the beginning of the book which I know happens but to misspell the main characters name twice on the same page I feel like it extra bad.
2. In some ways I feel the story could have ended about 100 pages earlier. Their are some big time jumps and that’s fine by me but I feel like the last 100 pages could have started a new book and expanded on the story of their conquest.
It’s a great story but I think it’s definitely not for everyone. I felt surprised and intrigued the whole time and the idea of the god coming alive within them was neat though I felt myself alway questioning of someone was doing the gods will or demonstruck.

I'm calling it quits at 222 pages. I can't help but be disgusted by the amount of what feels like women hate that this is crawling with. Right at he start you know women are seen as nothing in this world and its just progressively gotten worse. Then add on top of that a 40ish year old man lusting after a 12 year old, was just disgusting. I have no interest to continue this series and this is my last Miller book ever.

I had really mixed feelings on this one. You are essentially reading the backstory of the villain for the next two books in the trilogy. It was very dark and very bleak from the get go to the end.
Its set in a very religiously oppressive society and we follow the rise of slave girl Hekat. She is  strong and ruthless, not stopping until she achieves her goals. She only cares about herself and her one son, and believes she is their gods tool and chosen one. She was an anti Daenerys (dont even go there about the tv s8) she starts as a slave and rises up but couldn't care less about helping others like her.
My biggest criticism was everything had 'god in front of it, ie godsroom godspool godsbraid etc etc i could go on. It got supertedious. I felt it also needed some lighter moment or moments of hope because it was tough going.

Probably one of the best books I have ever read. I enjoyed every page, every paragraph. The religion that is developed in this plot is so deep and so mysterious and so fascinating that I find myself thinking about it even now, well over a year since I read the book. The MC was flawlessly developed and grew before my very eyes, page by page, changing until she became who she was at the end. The transition was smooth and seamless. I really can't praise this book enough.
My only disappointment was in the subsequent book. After Hekat, no other character was adequate for me.
