It is tough being a princess when you have to fight monsters and entertain guests for your birthday. I want more goat herder and Princess Sneezewort.

Princess Magnolia is back and so are those pesky goat-eating monsters. But even the Princess in Black doesn't get a day off on her birthday.

Clearly I'm in the minority here, but I was not a fan of this second installment. The plot line (Princess Magnolia struggles to keep her identity secret while entertaining guests at her castle) was waaaay too similar to the first. I get that repetition is good for beginning readers, but it's possible to include repetition without telling almost the exact same story twice.

The more I read of this series, the more I enjoy it.

New adventures, new characters, and new mishaps as Princess Magnolia tries to balance her birthday event with her Princess in Black duties, all while keeping her secret safe.

A fun story that nicely blends traditional princess elements (pink, unicorns, glass slippers, frilly dresses) and non-traditional elements (monster fighting, saving the day). This blend works so well and shows how one can have a range of interests.

Nice short chapters with beautifully detailed illustrations. These are fun books and I am looking forward to the next one.

A pony undercover as a unicorn named Frimplepants... Surely needs his own book?

Beautiful illustrations with a cute story but it holds up as many stereotypes as it smashes.
