So engrossing and compelling. As I kept reading, I couldn’t stop telling friends that they had to pick this up. It had so many juicy plot elements: a serial killer mystery, clandestine gay romance, rich LA high school melodrama, the list goes on. I would love to know how true to fact this is, but I think that’s part of the mystery that makes it so intriguing. My only qualm is that it was incredibly long. If you took out the stereotypically LA paragraphs droning on about which highway they took whilst driving around, it could have been cut down by about 100 pages (seriously). Even so, I would highly recommend this.

Een trage horror die leest als een trein. Helemaal anders dan american psycho maar zo beklijvend. Ook zo teeny. Seks, drugs, eliteschool en koelbloedige, mysterieuze moorden

i gave up on this one 3/4’s of the way in, sometime last fall, heavily due to the slow pacing and large ‘fat’ that BEE had written in this novel. i love his writing, sincerely, but there’s like 200 or so pages that could’ve been sliced from this.

a lottttttt of this book is the protagonist mapping out every single thing he does when he’s home, or in the car, it gets repetitive. being high on drugs, alone, reflecting, listening to alternative 80s music etc etc

but i just kept coming back to it. i don’t know why, but i did. i’m glad i finished it. i really do like this story. i’m a bitch for the eerie, slightly off putting tone of something just feeling *wrong* ….. the characters in here aren’t lovable or memorable at all, but as i said, what BEE really nails here is the *atmosphere*

this novel is HEAVY on *atmosphere* & vibes. if that’s your thing, in addition with the backdrop of 1980s LA, bored rich kids, who are high on drugs, in the midst of the golden age of serial killers, lingering homoeroticism, you will have fun. [then again, that’s kinda all his novels lmao]
