I don't usually like short stories. They are too short! I know, that's the point but I like to connect with characters and spend a lot of time with them. That's why I don't usually like short stories. I can honestly say that I really really enjoyed this batch though.
I tried to read Tithe by Holly Black a long time ago and could not get into it. I'm thinking after reading The Poison Eaters that I really need to give it another chance!

There is something for everyone in this collection of stories. Vampires, elves, shapeshifters, and of course faeries. I liked some of the stories more than others but I enjoyed all of them. The thing that stands out the most though, is Holly Black's gritty and honest writing. She doesn't pretty it up for anyone. I love that! Her writing is very dark at times but it's always beautiful. She weaves a web with her words and you get sucked right in.

I really recommend this collection to any supernatural/paranormal fan. Like I said, there's something for everyone!

I should have realized that reading a collection of short stories wood leave me wanting more.
I loved that there was a story that had Roiben in it. My favorite of the bunch.
I really wish most of these stories had more.

not a bad selection of short stories! i blew through this in a day and really liked the roiben and kaye (and others) feature.

also, reading the original "coldest girl in coldtown" made me really appreciate the novel the story eventually turned into. i am dying for a sequel!

Some of the stories I liked SO MUCH MORE than others. The vampire story felt a little too heavy handed as an allegory for drug use, but on the other hand I can imagine that for a young reader it would be more meaningful. As an old reader (hah!) it felt like too much. On the other hand, the story about the girl making a deal with the devil was whimsical and weird and a little scary; same for the eponymous story of the book. It is definitely the star of the collection, and I think if I had started with it I wouldn't have continued with the rest. :P

Which is all to say - these stories are good for what they are. Short, fun, a little scary. They aren't great by any means, but they are entertaining.

Reminds me of old school DeLint. More vividly poetic than Gaiman. It left me sad and wanting, like fairy fruit.

The stories in this collection were oddly inconsistent. I honestly thought I was reading an anthology with stories by a variety of authors because each story was written so wildly different from the others both in terms of quality and writer's fingerprint. Funny little collection full of good ideas, but it didn't feel streamlined or curated enough for my tastes.
