Cymbeline by William Shakespeare
2.0
Shakespeare characters really just never recognize each other and i’m really over that trope
that and the mysterious potion that makes people appear dead is just too overused
cymbeline is a king and wants to marry his only daughter, imgoen, to cloten. but imogen secretly marries porthumus. the king gets angry and banishes porthumus. imgoen hates cloten. a man in italy devices a plan to steal porthumus’s wedding ring. he goes to imogen and sneaks into her chamber at night and steals her bracelet and then describes her moles and bedroom to porthumus. porthumus is furious and tells his servant to murder imogen . imogen plans to leave and meet porthumus but finds out about the murder plot and is upset. she pretends to be a boy and gets lost in the woods and then runs into these two men and a father in the mountains. the men are actually her long lost brothers who were kidnapped when they were young. the men murder cloten who follows her. she feels ill and takes a potion that porthumus’s servant had given her and thought was restorative. but actually it’s from the queen who wants her dead. it’s kills her briefly but it was just a deep sleep. her brothers think she’s dead and grieve her. a battle commences between cymbeline of briton and caius of rome. porthumus hears of imogens death and plans to die too but is captured by cymbeline. the brothers also fight. they all end up in cymbeline court and everything is revealed.

Pericles by William Shakespeare

this one has dRaMa
pericles prince of tyre is visiting a nearby kingdom but discovers a plot to murder him so he flees the kingdom and leaves a trusted man on his throne. he voyages across the sea and brings grains to a starving kingdom. then he departs again but is caught in a storm which wrecks his ship. he is picked up by fisherman and brought to another kingdom where a tournament for the princess’s hand is occurring. he wins and they marry and they become pregnant. they decide to voyage back to Tyre but on the voyage the wife has the baby, Marina, and then dies. they have a funeral at sea and the body turns up at a temple of diana where they somehow nurse her back to health and she’s no longer dead and lives out her life in the temple. then pericles leaves his new baby with the grain kingdom and asks them to raise her and he heads back to Tyre. 14 years pass, don’t really know why he left her that long, but Marina is now being targeted by the grain kingdom that she is living in but while the murder is about to happen she is kidnapped by pirates and taken to an island and sold to a brothel. In this brothel she somehow talks every suitor out of it and eventually meets the governor. Pericles hears of his daughters supposed murder and goes into mourning but visits this island by chance and happens to meet her and realize it’s his daughter he hasn’t seen in years. He then gets a vision from Diana to go get his wife from the temple (which is honestly unrealistic Diana behavior) and he does and the whole family is reunited huzzah
honestly what a trip
also each big section had a man explaining the year gaps via rhyming couplets which was just awful

i love VE Schwabs books but this is decidedly a kids book. it was still really well written and a fun little story but not as enticing and intense as her other novels.
follows the story of a girl who was saved from a near death experience and can now see ghosts. Her parents are ghost hunters and move her from the US to Edinburgh, the most haunted city in the world, where she goes on an adventure

Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare
1.0
i think is the worst one yet
it pretty much had no plot. it was just a fable.
it follows Timon….of Athens, who spends his money lavishly on arts and his friends and throws wild parties where he gives out gems and cash to everyone. But then the next day debtors come and tell him he owes a lot of money. So he says ah really darn go ask my friends they’ll give it to you. But the “friends” all say they don’t owe anything. So Timon is bankrupt and throws one last party where he serves all his “friends” water and stones and calls them all fake lol
So he departs Athens and ends up finding gold in the wood and also running into a dude who is going to invade Athens. Timon dies and the guy does invade Athens and tell all the citizens how dumb they were for not helping out Timon.
But to be quiet honest I sorta feel like Timon was in the wrong and this was just a petty story about drama that happened to Shakespeare or something. Because honestly none of those people were his friends and he tried to buy their friendship. And he gave them gifts without them asking and then demanded they pay him back.
