Most of the book was a solid three stars. I liked for the most part the main characters and the side ones that surrounded them (the sense of community was heartwarming). The smut scenes were well written. The characters felt very real.
I didn’t like how much Prem ignored Kareena’s boundaries, specifically about the nickname and how this was never shown as wrong.
The main thing I didn’t like though, was the third act breakup. It hinges on the idea that you must love someone romantically to be in a relationship with them and also that you have to say this love verbally (and otherwise is bad). I hated this. I’m aromantic, and won’t ever love someone romantically (but I don’t mind the idea of being in a relationship really, they’d just have to be okay with me not technically reciprocating their feelings), and the idea that this is wrong rubbed me the wrong way. Also, I don’t like the idea of needing to verbalise everything. Words are hard, let actions show if that’s how it works for the other.
Writing style was beautiful, but the book had very little plot. It was mostly lore setup, and it was very repetitive. I won’t be continuing with the series (for a while) but it was enjoyable. Ish.
The first half was agony to get through, and I only like the second half because of the lore. I’m a big sucker for lore.
I didn’t like any of the characters. Karou (in the beginning) screamed of I’m Not Like Other Girls™ and eventually became even worse: boring. I didn’t feel any connection to Akiva, and I was really hoping he would die to spark some sort of plot in this book.
