Sixteen Wounded by Eliam Kraiem
wow, one of the most emotionally charged plays i've ever had the honor to read. kraiem's writing handles complex personalities and relationships with intelligence and nuance; it doesn't expose anything groundbreaking to an audience contextualized in global conflicts, but it shines a light on day-to-day living as a refugee with deep sensitivity
unfortunately, the ending was disappointing for me, as well as the same-old underwhelming aspect of "female characters that exist to serve the male ones" but otherwise, a really solid read

Do not pretend that talking about our feelings is going to change anything. It will not. It will not give my brother a real school to go to, or put shoes on his feet. It will not bring a doctor to my mother or free my friends from the jails they rot in.

It's very late. At this hour, problems always seem huge and unsolvable but, in the daylight, things will seem better.

following the audiobook with the physical book felt like walking through a museum of her life's journey, there's REALLY gorgeous photos and enough detail to each chapter but it's still a cookie cutter approach
i relate to her love for women, horny songs, graveyards, sticking to her guts and the butterfly effect. she is one of those earnest songwriters that make it easy to connect with on a human level (e.g jewel, dua lipa). honestly, 90% of the country references went over my head but the audio version played her songs in parts which married everything nicely
it's really comforting to listen to someone speak about their experiences from a place of ease and deep self-assurance; hope i'm as in love with life as she is when i get to her age

barely interesting dialogue between pretentious/annoying characters + don't understand the point of fracturing the play with time jumps that don't serve a purpose to the story + approaches many heavy topics but almost never develops them in a satisfactory way — except for the talk on the artist/work/audience relationship
The Like Switch: An Ex-FBI Agent's Guide to Influencing, Attracting, and Winning People Over by Jack Schafer, Marvin Karlins
phew! the central element of this book is the golden rule of friendship (If you want people to like you, make them feel good about themselves), which is repeated to exhaustion throughout, along with some interesting anecdotes. there are "techniques" and writing choices i just completely disagree with, not to mention every criminal mentioned sounded like an idiot, which felt equally realistic and dismissive
it was interesting to put a name to interactions that tend to happen naturally (like isopraxism, conversational bridgebacks, word mines, truth bias or the ben franklin effect), although there is a chunk of questionable terminology (the bitch hair flip... really?) that just doesn't fly for me
the best compliment i can give is that i would hand over this book for aliens to decipher the basic elements of how we as human beings CAN connect, and also that i hope the chapter on internet safety is taught in every school for the sake of kids' media literacy (lots of boomers might need it too)

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
had a giggle when i saw this categorized under "literary nonsense", it genuinely read like a michael bay movie for children (except for the terrifying illustrations and the BEHEADINGS)
have to respect the existence of this book as a catalyst to more lighthearted and non-educational children's fiction, but otherwise it was just okay for me

I-I hardly know, sir, just at present — at least I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then.

I almost wish I hadn't gone down that rabbit-hole—and yet—and yet—it's rather curious, you know, this sort of life!

Dost thou think, because thou art virtuous, there shall be no more cakes and ale?
what a cute & fun romp, good on mr william for only using 1 terrible word... that i noticed
loved that the story had light queer themes (gender presentation, almost a wlw plot), the occasional 4th wall breaking was fun as well
i'd love to see this play live

Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto
a heartfelt piece on the importance of grounding yourself while living with loss. the characters we follow deal with untimely deaths, work out their boundaries and find in each other the support only a chosen family can provide. especially appreciate how it emphasizes the need to keep going, to keep doing little tasks in grief until those same tasks feel like a new baseline
have to say i expected the writing to hone in on cooking more, whether it be descriptions of meals, the artistic process of cooking or the kitchen as a space; but regardless, this was really special
some other (spoilery) passages i really enjoyed:

In the innermost recess of my heart the light of instinct was twinkling, and I was as free of doubt as if I had heard the command, "Go!"
In retrospect I realize that fate was a ladder on which, at the time, I could not afford to miss a single rung. To skip out on even one scene would have meant never making it to the top, although it would have been by far the easier choice. What motivated me was probably that little light still left in my half dead heart, glittering in the darkness. Yet without it, perhaps, I might have slept better.

It's so great, I thought, having tea in the afternoon with someone you really feel at home with. I knew how wildly he tosses in his sleep, how much milk and sugar he takes in his coffee. I knew his face in front of the mirror, insanely serious, as he tries to tame his mop of unruly hair with the hair dryer. Then I thought, if we were still together I would be worrying about how I've just chipped the nail polish on my right hand scrubbing the refrigerator.
I had never cried this way in my life. As the hot tears poured out, I remembered that I had never had a proper cry over my grandmother's death. I had a feeling that I wasn't crying over any one sad thing, but rather for many.
When I finished reading I carefully refolded the letter. The smell of Eriko's favorite perfume tugged at my heart. This, too, will disappear after the letter is opened a few more times, I thought. That was hardest of all.
Design for Living by Noel Coward
a carefree 1930s romp about polyamory, which i imagine would be spicy at the time. the play is filled with good banter and witty (yet often pretentious) dialogue, it doesn't exactly explore the nuance of a throuple, but it celebrates the freedom to choose happiness first which i adored
i loved the lighthearted ending note but, above all else, i found the general tone of the play SO refreshing, the fact that being queer isn't a central issue or something to fit into what society was at the time — it ignores all of those implications (to a fault, yes!) and it sticks with "all vibes, no plot" which worked for me

Gilda: Yes, I hear voices. I hear my own voice louder than any of the others, and it's beginning to bore
me. Would you describe me as a super-egoist, Ernest?
Ernest: Yes, dear.
Gilda: Thinking of myself too much, and not enough of other people?
Ernest: No. Thinking of other people too much through yourself.
Gilda: How can anyone do otherwise?

If you were creative yourself you'd understand better. As it is, you know a lot. You know an awful lot. Your critical faculty is first rate. I'd rather have your opinion on paintings or books or plays than anyone else's I know. But you're liable to get sidetracked if you're not careful. Life is for living first and foremost. Even for artists, life is for living. Remember that.

a great period piece with melodic writing and well fleshed-out believable characters; hoped it leaned more often on the jazz club setting itself, something a bit more musical and lighthearted but that was my own expectation
also loved hearing the author speak on the play's genesis after listening to the play itself, that peek behind the curtain marries the experience the audience goes through with the intention and heart of the work
