I loved Kingfisher's Saints of Steel series. Compared to it, this novel seems less accomplished, partly because the plot is underdeveloped. As usual, Kingfisher creates striking characters, full of quirkiness, which makes the story enchanting, but I was hoping for a more adult tone, mixing fairy tale and exploration of the characters' psyches, as the author knows so well how to do. I was a little disappointed by the heroine's personality, which gives this book a very YA tone.

As with other Kingfisher titles, there's a poetic depiction of crafts or peculiar hobbies, such as perfumery or knitting. Throughout my reading, I hoped for more in-depth worldbuilding, as the universe is particularly evocative, but I was left wanting. The romance, as beautifully written as it is, alternating between sexual tension and amorous reveries, takes precedence over the mystery at the center of the story. I'll keep reading subsequent volumes, in the hope of learning more about the paladin universe!
