this book was an emotional fucking rollercoaster. it represented young love so perfectly, and it represented queerness so perfectly as well. i don't care that it's overly idealistic, it is perfect to me. it is what YA is supposed to be, just queer.
i am tired of the narrative that queer stories have to be about difficult things. queer stories can be just as simple as heteronormative ones, and even though ari and dante's isn't, it seems simple enough to me. they are soulmates, high school sweethearts, and they are perfect.
i am once again flabbergasted by how much i see myself in dante's character. he told ari that he is difficult to love, and i think that is a universal queer experience. especially for someone like myself and like dante, who is unabashedly their self. the intricacies and difficulties of a queer relationship are 100x harder to navigate because there is no map.
you are your own cartographer, as sáenz tells us. he got it right. these boys are my favorite cartographers, and i feel so lucky to experience them. i think this book was perfect, almost as perfect as its predecessor. i'm also glad legs didn't die. i would've thrown the book.
