Every time I read another of Emezi's works I worry that I'll have anything less than an incredible magical reading experience like an IDIOT, and every single time... they never fail to deliver. WILL EMEZI EVER WRITE A LESS THAN 5 STAR BOOK? IT'S LOOKING PRETTY FUCKING UNLIKELY

Vaguely disappointed in the amount of hetero in this, but otherwise LOVED the retellings of myths and folklore. Mythology and love!!!! But made not violent and misogynistic!!!! More about woman's bodily autonomy!!!! More of this please!!!!!!

One of my friends described this to me as a book that could have been a series of tweets and it’s hard to disagree. It’s a very pretty book though, and I am a sucker for colourful books.

Woof. I mean. Am I desensitised to Yanagihara’s brand of guilt and shame and agony and pain porn or am I desensitised to the experience of a global pandemic and governments absolute lack of care other than their own profit and power? Hard to say.
Book II was not as strong as the others and almost didn’t? Need to be included? Not sure how I feel about the end being so… open. Normally this fucker comes for me with a fucking lemon juice glazed machete with her writing but the ending was more like, a disposable wooden spoon: I guess it functions but where’s the drama?? Where’s the usual cut throat maniacal moral conundrum???
Still. Pls don’t accidentally predict any more massive historical future events, thanks.
