I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy
Wow. This is such a powerful story of courage and self love, though I wish Jannette didn’t have to go through all of that in the first place.
It’s crazy to think how much power our parents have over us when we are little. Kids know close to nothing, they mirror their environment and put their trust in their parents. So betrayal such as this from parents have long-lasting and sometimes irreversible consequences.

Mom didn’t get better, but I will.

DNF’d at 82%. I just can’t drag myself to finish this any longer. The writing was ok. I usually gravitate towards a character-driven story but this time I just couldn’t find joy in reading about the characters. I couldn’t relate to them nor find them very interesting and compelling.
I guess I was wrong going in with the expectation that I’ll experience the same thing the way Writers & Lovers made me feel.
Maybe some other time, I’ll try and reread this.

I've never read an entire book as mindfully and almost physically painful as this is. I didn't initially care about Trish and her continuous failed decision making (because let's be honest, none would ever really prepare us thoroughly for that kind of situation, let alone a kid stuck in a forest), but then I started to feel her pain, the agony she was going through, and what seems like an endless journey which leads to nothing but death. After all, that's what books are here for, right? To make us empathize with the characters as if they were a friend, a family—or even ourselves.
At the back of my mind, I knew the things she was afraid of, the It she was afraid of, is just a made up thing, and Steve's portrayal of her hallucinations was on-point that I started to believe It myself. Although at times I even hoped that It was just watching and protecting her all along. I liked the bits of comic relief throughout which made me chuckle a couple times, and how Steve never forgets the importance of this style so as not to bury readers of too much terror.
I will be able to sleep earlier tonight.

nice try in putting the issue about depression out in the open, but sometimes I feel like the book was desperately trying to convince me of things that should be forgiven and forgotten regarding the plot and its characters.
and no, unlike Colleen Hoover's other leading men, I didn't fall for Sagan this time. I learned the hard way to be consciously aware that there's .65% of chances there's a guy like him IRL; Sagan was breathed life from clay like wonder woman was. Props to Merit's progress though throughout the story, and everyone around her. It all just proves that most misunderstandings and problems can be resolved by being open and honest with people involved.
